Climate Action Coastlines

Golspie & Coul

The North Highlands & Islands Climate Hub has been commissioned by the Highland Council to stage a long term series of work in engaging the community of Golspie iin the Climate Action Coastlines Project, which is part of the Green Growth Accelerator Programme by the Scottish Government. It is currently in a Pathfinder stage of assessing what options may solve issues around flooding and coastal erosion in the Golpsie area through nature-based solutions.

The Green Growth Accelerator Programme funded by the Scottish Government will provide up to £1 million to support the pathfinders through the development phase of the programme, which together could unlock £40 million of local government investment in green infrastructure, backed by long term Scottish Government funding commitments.

Future funding commitments will be based on the achievement of project outcomes including carbon emissions reductions and green economy opportunities. The Green Growth Accelerator programme, developed with the support of the Scottish Futures Trust, was launched to provide a catalyst for public and private investment in low carbon infrastructure projects across Scotland.

What are nature-based solutions?

Climate Action Coastlines at the Botanics

During August and the Edinburgh Festival a small interactive display was mounted about the Climate Action Coastlines project at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. The display highlighted the work in Golspie, sharing more information about the village to promote Golspie as a destination. Information was supplied on the differences between grey coastline defences and nature based solutions. Those who viewed it were asked the share their views on both nature based solutions and how they use their coastline in their own place. You can view the display slides here.
