About the Community Climate Action Fund

The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub is delighted to offer its members small grants for community engagement activities or to launch a new climate action project. The Fund is available to existing and emerging community groups who are members of the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub.

We have a small funding pot available for funding applications up to £500 with two funding closing dates in 2023/24:

  • 5pm on Thursday 30th November 2023

  • 5pm on Wednesday 31st January 2024

Our funding is a small grant which is designed to either kickstart a climate action project in your community or carry out community engagement around climate change. We particularly encourage new groups or organisations who have not previously engaged in climate change themed projects to come forward for funding. For this reason we are unable to offer our funding as a contribution to a larger project.

Projects funded must be able to complete and report on the impact of their project by 31st March 2024.

To achieve the overall vision, aims and objectives of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub we will prioritise projects which:

  • Aim to create long-term change.

  • Build the skills and capacity of groups or organisations and communities.

  • Support and encourage collaborative working across groups or organisations, communities and areas.

  • Encourage sustainability through reusing, recycling and upcycling goods and products.

  • Encourage climate action and a just transition

  • Mitigate climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce environmental impact

What have we previously funded?

Crown Connects

Crown Connects, a community organisation in Inverness were funded by us to carry out community engagement in the Crown area of Inverness on active travel, growing spaces and making their community more climate ready. They held a community fun day where our Development Officer Bethany helped with community engagement.

Thurso Community Benefit Society

Operating Socially Growing a zero waste refill shop and greenhouses in the centre of Thurso, Thurso Community Benefit Society were funded to develop their e-commerce offering on their website and develop it to upscale their operations selling zero waste products and plug plants to the wider community while also offering a click and collect service to encourage waste free shopping.

Lairg & District Learning Centre

Letters to Earth is an exhibition co-ordinated by Lairg & District Learning Centre with contributions from international artists. We helped to fund the first staging of the exhibition in Rogart Mart, a community owned facility with a difference. The funding enabled a week long exhibition which engaged the community including school groups in climate change and various workshops held during the week.

Bressay Development Company

Were looking to carry out a community growing project but wanted to understand the challenges that they may face in Shetland and wanted to learn from others while also engaging their community. We funded them to visit Transition Turriefield and learn more about their community growing project while also holding workshops and community engagement events.

Reay Young Stars

Reay Young Stars operate children’s groups in the village of Reay in Caithness. Highlighting the cost of living crises and food waste while also recognising that they were a key site on the North Coast for other communities they wanted to pilot a community larder repurposing food that would otherwise go to waste. We funded the initial start up of this project and also linked the group to further funding and support.

Highland Wool CIC

Highland Wool CIC based in Sutherland have recognised that processes and treatment of sheep’s wool is both less than sustainable and also that wool due to the current prices has become something of a waste product. They planned to treat the whole fleece locally including ensuring any water in the process is recycled. We funded the initial pilot and investigations needed for the project and continue to support and advise.
