Climate Action wherever you go…

A few weeks ago me and my family stayed near Stranraer for a week long Holiday. It was lovely to spend time with family, have a break from work and to explore a new area I’d never been to.

Whenever I go somewhere outside of Ullapool, I make a point to look for a refill shop. I run a refill shop in Ullapool as part of my other job, so I am always interested to see what is happening in other areas as well. Now, there wasn’t a refill shop near to where we were staying, but there was lots of other things that piqued my interest!

There were a lot of cows in Stranraer, like a lot! And I was very pleased to come across a local dairy with a refill machine! Where you could buy, bring back and fill glass bottles of milk. As well as get some exciting flavours of milkshake if you wanted to. Being able to buy the milk direct from the farm, and in reusable packaging was a definite tick and one we were very excited to find.

The other place I visited was the Community Reuse Shop. It was a big warehouse, located next to the local recycling centre and had a fantastic array of reasonably priced second hand items. They divert waste from landfill, provide employment and are paving the way for more sustainable consumption in the area and beyond. If you are ever in the area I would definitely recommend a visit.

These 2 places I visited on holiday left a lasting impression, and got me thinking about how community climate action really is everywhere. It’s something we can support in our own communities, and in the ones we are lucky enough to visit.

So, if you are headed somewhere different, and you have the time. Then I would highly recommend looking out for organisations and projects that you can visit while you are there. You will be supporting community climate action, promoting sustainable tourism, meeting nice people and getting inspired for how you could take action in your local area.

The Highlands and Islands Climate Festival is happening throughout September. So make sure to check out the website to see what events are happening in your area or the areas you will be visiting over the next month.
